DNA Tests Uncover Sushi Fraud At Restaurants

The next time you order tuna at a sushi restaurant - watch out! - it may not be what you think it is. A team of scientists from Columbia University and the American Museum of Natural History conducting a genetic research project found that more than half of tuna ordered from 31 restaurants were "misrepresented" or selling endangered southern bluefin tuna. Some samples were not tuna at all, but escolar, a fish with fatty flesh that could pass as tuna but can cause diarrhea when consumed. (Full Article) Posted: 11-24-09

EWG Report: Toxic Cleaner Fumes Could Contaminate California Classrooms

Air pollution testing conducted for the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that cleaning supplies used in 13 key California school districts can cloud classroom air with more than 450 distinct toxic contaminants, including chemical agents linked to asthma and cancer. EWG released its findings today in Santa Monica during a news conference where attendees, again, called on the State legislature to adopt a measure that would encourage school districts across California to use less toxic cleaning supplies. FDA Urged to Ban Feeding of Chicken Feces to Cattle

A fight is brewing over the practice of feeding chicken feces and other poultry farm waste to cattle. A coalition of food and consumer groups that includes Consumers Union and the Center for Science in the Public Interest has asked the Food and Drug Administration to ban the practice. McDonald's Corp., the nation's largest restaurant user of beef, also wants the FDA to prohibit the feeding of so-called poultry litter to cattle. (Full Article) Posted: 11-3-09
